Papers, 1877-1899.

Collection is in three parts: notebooks (29 v.) containing original research on the gypsies, vocabularies, anthologies of folk-tales and songs; misc. biographical, historical and geographical documentation used in his editing of Chambers's Encyclopedia, the Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland, and other reference sources. Another series contains published reviews of his writings and misc. clippings and journal articles, mostly relating to gypsies, along with lecture notes and manuscripts for In Gypsy tents, Kriegspiel, A Suffolk parson, and possibly other works published and unpublished. Finally, a series of letters received, 1872-96, principally from the eminent French ethnographer of gypsy life, Paul Théodore Bataillard and other correspondents. The library, working papers and correspondence of Francis Hindes Groome, received in 1901, form a remarkably rich source of information on many aspects of 19th c. gypsy life in Europe. With the collection are two notebooks of Robert Hindes Groome; one containing biblical researches (possibly sermon notes) and the other an autobiographical sketch.

29 v. + 2 boxes.
