Letters and other documents relating to the "ether controversy;" whether Dr. Charles T. Jackson or Dr. William Thomas Green Morton should be credited with the first successful use of ether as an anesthetic in surgical operations. Morton had used ether on a patient in Boston in 1846, at the suggestion of Jackson. Includes letters of the principals in the dispute, as well as testimony for and against them.
