Letter, 1776 October 18, Williamsburg [Va.] to William Meriwether, Louisa [County, Va.].

Extends his condolences on the death of William's son. The legislature in Williamsburg has been busy. Bills introduced include acts to revive the Tobacco Law, to abolish entails, and to raise six new regiments. Laws passed include acts to divide Fincastle County into Kentucky, Washington, and Montgomery counties, Fincastle becoming extinct, and to form Henry County from part of Pittsylvania. [Thomas] Jefferson has proposed that the seat of government be moved from Williamsburg to Richmond; the people of Williamsburg are in fear of enemy attack. Measures are being taken to assure that delegates attend the sessions, as attendance has been very poor. Is trying to sell William's tobacco, perhaps to [Carter] Braxton or [John] Norton. Adds a note that Mr. [?] Ross was acquitted due to insufficient evidence.
