Copley Foundation and Collection records, 1954-1980.

The William and Noma Copley Foundation and Collection Records document the couple's philanthropic and collecting activities. The archive dates from 1954-1980, the bulk being from 1954-1966 when the Copleys directed the Foundation. Correspondence after 1966 generally comes from Noma Copley's personal files. The collection contains correspondence with foundation advisors, composers and artists who were awarded grants, in effect demonstrating the Foundation's award process, and with artist friends about personal matters and the collection. Additionally, there is correspondence with Richard Hamilton gathered while he was editor of the Copley Foundation's monograph series, both of a business and personal nature. A separate series has personal correspondence mostly collected by Noma Copley with many drawings and handmade cards. There is much correspondence and material relating specifically to the collection, covering topics such as exhibition loans, appraisals, conservation of the collection, financial and insurance documents and photographs of the art works. Series I. Foundation Documents contains 1.25 lin. ft. (2.5 boxes) of material primarily pertaining to the Foundation's grant program, 1954-1966. Items include statutes and by-laws, award recommendations by Darius Milhaud and others for prominent composers and promising students, and by Roberto Matta and others for artists, and correspondence with awardees, including Peggy Glanville-Hicks, Shinkichi Tajiri, Bernard Pfriem, Jean Arp, Hans Bellmer, Dan Flavin, Wifredo Lam, Dorothea Tanning and Patrick Waldberg. Series II. Richard Hamilton Correspondence holds ca. 145 letters between the British Pop artist Richard Hamilton and the Copleys in his capacity as editor of the Copley Foundation monograph series, 1960-1966. Arranged in rough chonological order. The long, detailed letters primarily concern book production and distribution. Some also contain personal matters, and after 1962, there is more reference to art world gossip, Copley's and Hamilton's gallery and museum exhibitions, collecting, Hamilton's interest in the medium of artists' books and censorship. Series III. Personal Correspondence, contains .5 lin. ft. (1 box) of letters, drawings and cards from artists collected by Noma Copley, 1957-1980 (bulk 1966-1980), filed alphabetically. Letters are generally of a chatty, personal nature, but also include descriptions of working interests from artists Vija Celmins, Chryssa, Walter De Maria, Richard Hamilton, Man Ray, Roberto Matta, Irving Petlin and H.C. Westermann, among others. This series contains some handmade cards and drawings by artists. Series IV. Collection Documents, 1 lin. ft. (2 boxes), 1954-67 (bulk 1964-1966), comprises material relating to the exhibition and care of the collection. Includes are letters with museum and gallery directors and staff, loan forms, certificates of insurance, appraisals and insurance evaluations, condition and treatment reports, shipping documents and photograph requests. Other documents include financial and insurance papers. Series V.
