The Vander Poel Campanian collection is a research archive assembled for the study of the history of the excavations at Pompeii, and to a lesser extent, at Herculaneum and Stabiae. The collection includes scholars' archives, rare books and articles, photographic materials, prints, maps and plans, drawings, paintings and the documentation of research projects and publications on Pompeii conducted or commissioned by Vander Poel. It represents the culmination of almost forty years of investigations by Vander Poel, having been assembled in the period from circa 1958 to 1997. Yet, the collection contains much earlier material, acquired by Vander Poel in the form of both original works and reproductions.

Halsted Billings Vander Poel (1911-2003) began collecting rare books and manuscripts, antiques and art as a young man, but after moving to Rome in 1956, he also turned his attention to the study of Pompeii.
