Chapter 426, Laws of 1927, created the Conservation Department. From 1915-1927, a full-time Conservation Commission (WIHV86-A1162) had directly administered the state's conservation programs. The State Historical Society was founded in 1846, chartered in 1853, and became a trustee of the state in 1855. Chapter 75, Laws of 1967, continued the Society as an independent agency.
