Letters written by Alois J. Liethen of Appleton, Wis. to his wife, Gretchen Hofmann, during the period of their courtship (from 1936 until their marriage in 1939) and later, during his service in the U.S. Army during World War II. Liethen, who attained the rank of captain in the XX Corps, G-2 Section, worked as a translator and interrogator of captured German soldiers.
