Papers of Brigadier General Edward Bragg of the 6th Wisconsin Infantry in the Civil War, a hero of the "Iron Brigade." His letters are mainly to his wife in Fond du Lac, Wis., written from camp and battlefield, and later a few from the House of Representatives in Washington and from Havana, Cuba, where he was consul general. There is a little material from Hong Kong, China, where he was stationed as consul general for four years, and some political letters from William F. Vilas and others.

Bragg was born in Unadilla, New York, the son of Margarette (Kohl) and Joel B. Bragg. Bragg attended district schools as a child. He then attended the local academy and Geneva College (today Hobart College) in Geneva, New York, where he was one of the charter members of the Kappa Alpha Society. He left college before graduating, in 1847, and studied law in the offices of Judge Charles C. Noble.
