Papers of a merchant who operated general merchandise stores, first at Mechum's River in Albemarle County, Virginia, and then at Liberty in Bedford County, Virginia. The papers consist of correspondence, receipts, and agreements relating to Graves' stores and collection agency; letters from his sons while they were attending Washington College in Lexington, 1866-1871; one letter written on behalf of Robert E. Lee regarding room and board at the College; and accounts for a store owned by Dennis Nalley (d. 1840) in Nelson County, Va., whose estate Graves administered.
