Letters written by John H. Knight, a captain in the 18th U.S. Infantry, to his wife Susan and other family members, describing military life during the Civil War and several letters in 1868 from the Utah and Wyoming area; also correspondence of his wife's family, the Levi Clarks of Delaware, including letters from Robert Milligan, a friend serving with the Delaware Volunteers. Knight discusses Confederate sympathizers in Maryland, the lack of civil government in Virginia, opportunities for speculation in the West, and his grief at the death of his wife. Some of the letters are originals, some typewritten copies.
