Letters, 1864.

Four letters, written in February and October, 1864, by Private William Otter, Co. D, 1st Wisconsin Cavalry, to his sister. He describes the wounds suffered in battle, the lack of rations, rumors about the war circulating through camp, and writes poetically about the coming of peace. Otter's unit was in Tennessee at the time the letters were written.

William Otter was a midshipman serving on British ship, HMS Iris, who undertook a voyage in the Pacific including Sydney in 1858. He was the son of Archdeacon Otter of Horsham, England.
