Consists of a journal and a history of Company F of the 3rd Wisconsin Cavalry. The journal was copied into a ledger initially used as a Record of resignations and appointments in Carroll County, Arkansas from September 1860 to September 1862 which are crossed out. Porter's record of the American Civil War begins April 19, 1861 in Baraboo, Wisconsin where he joined Company E of the 1st Wisconsin Infantry (3 months), through his mustering out as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 3rd Wisconsin Cavalry. Also included in the journal are notes compiled by Porter about men who were transferred, discharged, died, deserted or taken prisoner by the enemy; other lists compiled by Porter; and drawings of Porter's home in Baraboo, the encampment at Camp Scott in Milwaukee, a cavalry officer on his horse and of a Naval ship. The history of Company F, 3rd Wisconsin Cavalry is a photocopy of a transcript made from the original manuscript sent by Porter to Major B.S. Henning, Chief of Cav. Dept. of Kan., Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. It covers its organization in Baraboo in January 1862 through August 6, 1864.
