Files relating to the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) program in which the Wisconsin Arts Board began participation in 1990. The purpose of Dance on Tour is to strengthen dance and its audiences by circulating exemplary dance around the state in ways that are responsive to dance companies and artists, dance presenters, and state audiences and communities.

The Arts Board was created as a statutory agency by Chapter 90, Laws of 1973, and was subsequently attached to the Department of Administration (WIHV85-A694) by Chapter 333, Laws of 1973. 1995 Wisconsin Act 27 attached the Board to the Dept. of Tourism (WIHV90-A1094). The Board was preceded by a nonstatutory committee, the Governor's Council on the Arts, created in 1963.
