Typescript copy of the diary of a former mayor of St. Louis, Mo., and New Mexico Territorial Governor, 1852-1853, describing his journey via the Santa Fe trail to Santa Fe, his reception there, his trips around the territory, his 1853 election campaign for territorial delegate to Congress, and his unsuccessful contest in Washington, D.C., for the disputed seat. Includes careful observation of the contour of the country, plant and animal life, travelers, transportation, Indians, settlements, land cultivation, and plans for improvement.
