Metropolitan and local planning, 1950-1997.

Records of various transportation planning projects and programs administered by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation in conjunction with the U.S. Dept. of Transportation and regional and local planning organizations. The files contain correspondence, memoranda, and progress reports concerning the transportation planning activities of metropolitan planning organizations and regional planning commissions. Included are materials which document the Transportation Improvement Program, Transportation System Management Program, and the Urban Transportation System Planning Program. The processed portion of this series is summarized above, dates 1960-1989, and is described in the register. There are additional accessions dating 1950-1997 which are described below.

The Highway Commission was created by Chapter 337, Laws of 1911. State Laws of 1929 reorganized the commission from a five person, part-time agency to a three-person, full-time agency. With the reorganization of state government agencies in 1967 (Chapter 75), the Highway Commission was placed under the newly created Department of Transportation (see WIHV85-A1884).
