Central subject file of the Division of Corrections. Records include correspondence; reports; budgetary and program materials; building plans and proposals; annual and monthly reports and activity logs describing trends in institutional programs, planning, and administration; personnel records; files on professional organizations; and legislative material. The core of the records pertain to administrative matters such as the custody and discipline of inmates, the detention and reformation of delinquents, the probation and parole system, and other responsibilities of the division. Special topics addressed include affirmative action, community based corrections, foster and group home management, correctional farming and manufacturing programs, inspections of county jails, and research projects in penology. The processed portion of this series is summarized above, dates 1930-1990, and is described in the register. Additional accessions date 1957-2007 and are described below; these files include materials concerning transition into the Department of Corrections.

Chapter 435, Laws of 1939 created a new State Dept. of Public Welfare (WIHV85-A488) with a Division of Corrections and transferred to that division the functions of the former Board of Control (WIHV85-A2106) relating to the administration of the state's penal institutions.
