Papers of William H. Allen, director of the institute from its chartering in October 1915 to 1962. The institute was designed to carry on training and publication programs, to promote efficiency in education, efficiency in government, and other forms of civic-improvement functions begun by the earlier Bureau of Municipal Research organized by a group of reformers in New York City in 1907. The collection includes Allen's correspondence, many newspaper and magazine clippings, pamphlets, and replies to questionnaires on currrent events used by the institute in connection with various research problems. Much of the material refers to work done in New York City, but reports on surveys conducted at the University of Wisconsin and elsewhere are also included. The collection is arranged by subject, and includes Allen's correspondence with such educators and political figures as Lewis W. Alderman, school administrator of Portland, Oregon, Fiorello La Guardia, mayor of New York City, William McAndrew, superintendent of schools in Chicago, Illinois, A. E. Winship, editor of the Journal of Education, and William J. O'Dwyer, mayor of New York City. The processed portion is summarized above and is described in the register.
