Legislation of 1905 established a Railroad Commission of three members, to be appointed by the Governor (Chap. 362). The Commission succeeded the Railroad Commissioners' Department (WIHV85-A2017) which had been established in 1874. The name of this agency was changed in 1931 to the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (WIHV85-A696). Chapter 183, Laws of 1931, renamed the Railroad Commission (WIHV85-A2016) as the Public Service Commission. Comprehensive motor carrier regulation was added by Chapter 488, Laws of 1933. Securities regulation was transferred to the Banking Dept. (WIHV86-A605) in 1937. The Reorganization Act of 1967 continued the commission as an independent regulatory agency.
