Records of National Guard units, 1879-1928.

Order books, muster rolls, minutes, and miscellaneous organizational records of local units of the Wisconsin National Guard. Although defined as public records, the majority of this series was received by the Historical Society through private donors. Represented are the Lake City Guards of Madison, Troop A of the First Wisconsin Cavalry (the Light Horse Squadron) of Milwaukee, the First Wisconsin Infantry (also of Milwaukee), and Company A of the 3rd Wisconsin Infantry.

The Wisconsin National Guard was established as such by Chapter 208, Laws of 1879, but it was preceded by both a territorial and a state militia (WIHV91-A663). As a result of the lack of uniformity among the National Guard units participating in the Spanish-American War, Congress enacted a law in 1903 to unify the National Guard under federal supervision.
