Fondo Gesuiti, 1545-1826.

This miscellaneous collection appears to have been collected by someone in the Vatican and is not a part of the Jesuit archives that has been alienated. It does mainly concern the suppression of the Jesuits. Busta 49 is not atypical. Entitled "Lettere Diverse, 1612-1826," this packet contains complaints, laments, requests, and controversies, mostly presented by Jesuit communities or individuals to or collected by the prior general. The bulk of the documents are from the seventeenth century. These varied documents come from all over Europe and from "the Indies" as well as one item, a copy of an eighteenth-century letter, regarding Jesuits in China; they are written in Latin, French, Italian, and Spanish. There are many petitions, some by men wishing to transfer to another order or house, and one, addressed to the pope, requesting reinstatement into the Jesuit Order. Problems with other religious orders emerge often among these papers, and also matters concerning nuns. One document concerns the censorship of one Jesuit's allegedly antipapal work published in German. The earliest document, dated May 22, 1612, is a letter (or copy of a letter) by the "martire Padre Scotto Benedettino" to Jesuits in England.

In 1534 Ignatius of Loyola, a Basque and former soldier, met in Paris with six companions to take a private vow of poverty and one to place themselves at the disposition of the pope. On September 27, 1540, Paul III issued the bull Regimini militantis ecclesiae, canonically establishing the Society of Jesus. The constitutions of the society were drawn up by Ignatius who submitted his work for approval in 1550. Along with working toward the spiritual benefits of its members, the aim of the order w...
