Carmeletani, ca. 1500-1800.

The collection includes information sent to the Cong. statu regulari and Cong. delle Riforma in the sixteenth century from the Carmeletani in Mantova, also information on houses in Parma, Venice, France, Spain. There are some copies and originals of bulls, briefs (indulgentiae), and the like, as well as a list of houses/members in Italy, 1668-1670. Located separately were the following other Carmelite materials: four books from the Procura generale--volume 1, 1718-1721, contains formulas for different (frequently used) procedures in various congregations at the end; vol. 2, 1721-1724; vol. 3, 1724-1728; vol. 4, 1740-1743. "Registrum omnium actorum factorum et jurium productorum pro parte et instantia ... Carmelitanorum ... cum Margharita Laurent Griffone ... notarii archivii," 1720-1723.

The Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was founded in Palestine around 1154 by St. Berthold (d. about 1195) but it has claimed (without authentic documentation) continuity with hermits settled on Mount Carmel in earlier times, and even to be a direct descendant of Elijah and the "sons of the prophets" (cf. 2 Kgs. 2).
