Manuscripts and books pertaining chiefly to Barry's naval career, including the log of his merchant sloop Peggy, the receipt book and other papers of the Continental ship Alliance, and the log and other papers relating to the U.S. frigate United States. Also included are a British navy signal book once owned by Admiral Lord Howe, Barry's copy of Nathaniel Colson's The mariner's new calendar (1762), and miscellaneous letters and personal papers.

Richard Howe, Earl Howe, was born in London, England, on March 19, 1726, the son of Emanuel Scrope Howe (1699-1735) and Mary Sophia Charlotte von Kielmansegg (1703-1782).
