In 1919 Edward Bushnell was appointed publicity agent for the University of Pennsylvania. His appointment began a long and expanding effort at public relations at the University. In 1954 the Department of Public Relations expanded its work to include two new units, Motion Picture Services and the Office of Radio and Television. The Multimedia and Educational Technology Services of the University of Pennsylvania was originally a language lab of the College of Arts and Sciences of the University. The lab changed its name to Language Laboratory in 1965 and the material it used gradually expanded from the single kind of sound tapes to multimedia.
