Born in Rhode Island; son of Stephen and Eliza (Greene) Harris; through both the Harris and Greene families descended from the earliest settlers in Rhode Island; Brown class of 1838. After a twenty-year career in the commission business in New York he retired to Providence and collected books, manuscripts, and art.
