Journal of a trip to California, across the continent from Weston, Mo. to Weber Creek, Cal. in the summer of 1850 : ms, [1853].

Handwritten copy of a diary kept by Smith on his overland journey to Calif., from his home in Centerville, Ind., during the Gold Rush. The account of the journey begins aboard the steamer Cambria in Cincinnati. Includes descriptions of scenery, weather, daily travel details, and biblical quotes. Mentions Indians encountered. The last pages of the journal contain a letter to his mother and entries dated Apr. 10-17, 1853.
