Anson Stiles Blake papers, 1882-1959.

Consists chiefly of typescripts and manuscripts of Blake's speeches to San Francisco Bay Area social clubs and organizations, concerning Calif. history and contemporary issues, including labor relations, the cement and asphalt business, Berkeley, and other topics. Includes papers relating to his participation with the California Historical Society and the Society of California Pioneers, and a small amount of personal correspondence, receipts, and miscellany. Also includes some material on Blake's father, Charles Thompson Blake and his travelling and business partners, Roger Sherman Baldwin, Charles T.H. Palmer, and Caspar T. Hopkins, who is represented by a [1932] typed copy of his autobiography, written in 1888-1889.

Blake was a businessman and partner in Calif. quarrying companies and the son of gold rush pioneer Charles T. Blake. In 1899, he became president of his father's company, Oakland Paving Company. Blake and Bilger was a quarrying company which grew out of the Oakland Paving Company; it later became Blake Brothers Company as a result of a buyout and merger by the Blake family in 1914. Blake was a Yale graduate from New Haven who travelled to Calif. to mine for gold with friend, Roger Baldwin, joining their companions Edwin Tyler and Charles T.H. Palmer.
