Mason, the eighth Kentucky county, was created by the Virginia legislature in 1788 from part of Bourbon County. It is named for George Mason. Maysville is the county seat. The Circuit Court is the highest court of civil and criminal jurisdiction within Mason County, and serves as the appellate court for many cases arising from lower courts.
