French Forrest (1796-1866) was born in St. Marys County, Maryland. On June 9, 1811 he was appointed midshipman and thus began a long naval career. On March 30, 1844 he was commissioned captain in the U.S. Navy and held that rank until he cast his lot with Virginia in April, 1861.
