Samuel C. Vance (d. 1830), a U.S. Army officer in the Northwest Territory, was deputy paymaster at Fort Washington, near Cincinnati (1791-1802). From 1803-1830 he was a merchant and land speculator at Lawrenceburg (Dearborn County, Ind.). Lawrence M. Vance operated a general merchandise store in Indianapolis and was a contractor for the construction of the Lawrenceburg and Upper Mississippi Railroad and other railroad lines. The second son and third child of Col. William Preston and his wife Susanna Smith, was born at "Greenfield," Botetourt County (Va.), 2 August 1765. He graduated from the College of William and Mary in 1783, and practiced law in Montgomery and Washington counties in Virginia. Preston served in the House of Delegates in 1788 and 1789.
