Civil War diary and account book, 1860-1865.

The diary chronicles the various campaigns and movements in which Irby was involved in addition to recording his frequent breakdowns in health. The volume was also used to record debts owed to William H. Irby and contains reminiscences concerning the war's destructive effect on the southern economy, including bleak descriptions of the loss of money in slaves; the depression of land values and Confederate money; the total loss of Irby's father's estate through speculation in Confederate banks; and the inability of collecting debts owed to him by a number of soldiers.
