Copies of letters sent by The Adjutant General to the President, Members of Congress, the Secretary of War, chiefs of bureaus of the War Department, officials of other departments, Governors of States and Territories, commanding officers of military divisions, departments, and posts, and other Army officers, relating principally to personnel and organization of the Army, stations of troops, activities of troops in the field protecting frontiers against Indian depredations or fighting wars, establishment of military posts, and Indian affairs and also to a great variety of other matters that came under the functions of The Adjutant General's Office. The volumes also contain copies of endorsements (replies to incoming communcations or forwarding comments) sent between 1800 and 1850.
