ALS: Hastings [Sussex, Eng.], to Lord Northwick, 1844 Dec.

In this autograph letter signed, Sotheby assures Lord Northwick that his stay in Hastings to regain his health will not prevent him from involvement with the sale of the library of Benjamin Bright and encloses a large paper copy of the sale catalog. In addition to some sales of law booksand manuscripts in 1844, Sotheby's conducted a twenty-four day sale of Bright's library in March 1845. Samuel Sotheby also encloses a prospectus for his edition of his father's Typography of the fifthteen century (published in 1845).

Samuel Leigh Sotheby, younger son of auctioneer Samuel Sotheby, was operating his auction house in the Strand, London as Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge in 1844. John Rushout, second Baron Northwick, collected pictures, manuscripts, books and objets de virtu. He maintained his collections at Northwick Park, Middlesex and at Thirlestane House in Cheltenham; after his death in 1859, his heir sold the latter residence to the collector Sir Thomas Phillipps.
