English antiquary and collector. He began collecting while at Rugby School and Oxford. On inheriting his father's estate at Middle Hill in Worcestershire, Phillipps embarked on a career of collecting manuscripts and books. His collection of manuscripts eventually numbered over 60,000 items. Horatio Rodd and his brother, Thomas Rodd the younger, took over their father's bookselling business in 1823. After the business was dissolved, Horatio Rodd became a picture dealer and printseller. His customer, Sir Thomas Phillipps, collected in his lifetime over 60,000 manuscripts of all ages, countries and subjects. He was particularly eager to preserve those printed on vellum.
