[Christmas cards], 1939-1950 / Blanche Ames, Oakes Ames.

Between 1937 and 1949 Blanche and Oakes Ames created Christmas cards that featured Blanche's orchid illustrations (line drawings) and contained verses selected by Oakes from various literary authors. A book on the Christmas greetings were published as tribute to Blanche and Oakes Ames by the Botanical Museum of Harvard University, 1975.

Blanche Ames Ames (February 18, 1878 – March 2, 1969) was an American artist, political activist, inventor, writer, and prominent supporter of women's suffrage and birth control. Born Blanche Ames in Lowell, Massachusetts, Ames was the daughter of Adelbert Ames, a West Point graduate who became a Civil War General and Mississippi Governor, and Blanche Butler Ames, who attended the Academy of the Visitation and enjoyed painting and the arts. Born in North Easton, Massachusetts on September 26, 1874, Oakes Ames was the son of Massachusetts Governor Oliver Ames. He received a bachelor's degree from Harvard in 1898, followed by a master's degree in 1900. Ames had a lengthy and distinguished career as a botanist, including serving as supervisor of the Arnold Arboretum from 1927-1937 and as the Arboretum's second director from 1937 to 1945.
