Ethiopia Records 1969-2005; 1988-2005

This series comprises records created or retained by persons responsible for coordinating ELCA mission activities in Ethiopia. These records were generated during the course of documenting, monitoring, and publicizing projects, programs, and general updates pertaining to the efforts to practice the accompaniment model of mission whereby the ELCA's Division for Global Mission (DGM) walks with the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus (EECMY) in mission efforts. The records also represent efforts on the part of DGM to provide funding for various projects coordinated by the EECMY and its synods. The records are from 1969-2005, but the bulk date from 1988-2005. The date range precedes the existence of the ELCA because certain records were retained permanently by the area program director and as such were kept in this series for continuity purposes. This series comprises several accessions received into the ELCA Archives and as such includes records of the program directors mentioned in this series' background: Carol J. Birkland, Lynda M. Tidemann, the Rev. David H. Nelson, the Rev. Said R. Ailabouni, and Gaylord M. Thomas. Record types include correspondence, meeting minutes, project proposals, progress reports, audit reports, financial statements, budget proposals, project reports, agenda, exhibits, memoranda, and topical papers and resource materials. The series includes records related to the structure of the EECMY, including minutes and reports from its General Assembly, Council, and Executive Committee, and financial reports, audits, and budgets for the EECMY. There are also records related to some, but not all of the synods that comprise the EECMY. Records also include work related to the EECMY's Development and Social Services Commission (DSSC), Evangelism department, Gospel department, development office, women's ministry, and the EECMY's seminary, Mekane Yesus Seminary. In addition to these units, there are also records relating to certain committees and associations, including the Committee of Mutual Christian Responsibility (CMCR), a committee created to coordinate support and information between the EECMY and partner churches, and the Christian Relief and Development Association (CRDA), an umbrella organization comprising non-governmental organizations working in development and relief efforts in Ethiopia. Subject matter includes projects related to prevention and control of HIV/AIDS and caring for victimized children orphans from AIDS, the famine and drought in Ethiopia, Oromo refugees, scholarships, hospital and education work, solar power, and Bible translation. While this series includes records related to specific governing councils, committees, and assemblies, it does not have complete sets of these minutes and in most cases, there are many gaps in the records. This caveat also holds true for church publications, audit reports, financial statements, and membership statistics. It appears that whatever was sent to DGM is what comprised the files. It cannot be ascertained if consistent efforts were made to fill in any gaps in the records.
