Alexander Telfair papers, 1765-1832.

This collection consists of correspondence, receipts, certificates, and deeds. Included are a receipt and bill of sale for slaves sold to Alexander Telfair by Sarah G. Telfair; a receipt for 1/2 Carolina hoes bought by Telfair from I.K. Tefft; and minutes from a meeting of the Trustees of the Savannah Theater, 1822. A large portion of the collection concerns Thorn Island plantation, including a certified copy of Alexander Shaw's will (Shaw was a former owner of lands included in the plantation); a release from Thomas Philput to Edward Telfair for 800 acres on the Savannah River; two deeds for land in Barnwell District, South Carolina; a deed from Sarah G. Telfair to Alexander Telfair for Thorn Island plantation, 1818, and a plat of the plantation.

Israel Keech Tefft (1794-1862) was born in Rhode Island and came to Savannah in 1816. He and James William Finn, noted actor and playwright, became joint editors and proprietors of the Savannah Georgian. He was associated with the Bank of the State of Georgia from 1822 until his death. He was one of the founders of the Georgia Historical Society in 1839 and was its Corresponding Secretary until his death.
