John Stevens papers, 1825-1887.

This collection consists of two personal narratives, a sketch of Midway Church and the surrounding area, the genealogy of Henry Dana Stevens (John Steven's nephew), portions of three letters, and a photograph of the Stevens coat-of-arms. The first personal narrative, entitled "Personal Narratives of John Stevens of Liberty County, Ga., copied from his diary written in his handwriting," is a bound folio that contains typed copies of "Genl. Lafayette's Visit to Savannah...1825," and "Personal Narrative of Sherman's Raid in Liberty County, Ga. Atrocities of the Enemy, etc. by John Stevens, an Eye-Witness." The second personal narrative is a manuscript copy of his narrative of Sherman's raid in Liberty County, dated Quitman, Nov. 5, 1877. The last page of the narrative contains a poem "Composed by me on the bank of the Suwanee River in 1865," signed "Refugee." The sketch of Midway Church and its surrounding area is unsigned and undated, and is missing page 1; it ends with the names of Liberty County military companies which served in the Civil War. Henry Dana Stevens' genealogy was prepared for insertion in Numsell's American Ancestry, although it is not included in the 8 volume published by Numsell. This collection also includes portions of three incomplete letters by Julia King regarding the Munro and Stevens families.
