Joseph Nathan Teal papers, 1879-1954.

Teal was a leading attorney and partner in the firm Teal, Winfree, McCulloch et al. in Portland, Oregon. He was an outstanding authority on railroad rate and transportation matters. He was U.S. Shipping Commissioner from October 1920 to March 1921. Teal's most notable achievement was a victory over the Interstate Commerce Commission concerning the Columbia Basin Rate Case, circa 1920. The decision: a 10% reduction in freight rates for the Pacific Northwest. The collection includes business correspondence, 1916-1925, regarding the Interstate Commerce Commission and the freight rate cases, shipping, commerce, the River and Harbor bill, and local and national politics. Business correspondents include William E. Borah, Louis D. Brandeis, George E. Chamberlain, Herbert Hoover, Robert M. Lafollette, William G. McAdoo, Charles L. McNary, Gifford Pinchot, John D. Rockefeller, Jr., Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Woodrow Wilson. Diaries (1879-1928, 50 volumes) and Teal family papers, including correspondence and estate records of his wife, Bessie Meldrum Thompson Teal (1867-1943) and Joseph N. Teal are included. Legal business papers of Teal, Winfree, McCulloch, et al., circa 1900-1954, regarding cases dealing with shipping, lumber, and mercantile businesses are also included.

Clyde Bruce Aitchison (1875-1962) was an attorney and Interstate Commerce Commissioner. He was born in Iowa, educated at Hastings College, Neb., University of Oregon, and American University. He began the practice of law at Council Bluffs, Iowa in 1896, and moved to Portland, Ore., in 1903. He was Commissioner of the Oregon Railroad Commission and its successor the Public Service Commission, 1907-1916, and solicitor for the National Association of Railroad Commissioners, 1916-1917.
