Olaus J. Murie papers, 1910-1961.

The Olaus J. Murie Papers consist of field notes on flora, fauna, and physiography; maps and elevation sketches; correspondence; reports; and a large number of photographs. While much of the material relates to Murie's work as a biologist and field naturalist in Alaska in the years 1920-1927 and 1936-37, the collection also includes field notes from his early work (1910-1917) in California, Oregon, Washington, and Canada, and general notes from his later work in California, Nevada, Wyoming, and New Zealand.

Biologist and field naturalist Olaus Johan Murie (1889-1963), the son of Norwegian immigrants, was born and raised in Moorhead, Minnesota. On completing his studies in zoology and wildlife biology at Oregon's Pacific University in 1912, he became an Oregon state conservation officer. In 1914-1917 he participated in scientific explorations of Hudson Bay and Labrador for the Carnegie Museum of Pittsburgh.
