The Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States (ELAS) was founded in 1859 by Henry Baldwin Hyde (1834-1899). Reynolds I. Nowell (1905-1984) was a Mormon businessman and insurance company executive. He was born in Salt Lake City, and attended school at the Utah State Agricultural College and the University of Illinois.
