Walter Drew McCaw, 1863-1939, was a career Army medical officer. After training at the Medical School of Virginia and Columbia University Medical School, he joined the Army Medical Department in 1884. He served in various posts in the west and south, in Cuba during the Spanish American war, and in the Philippines afterward. He was appointed director of the Library on October 3, 1903. Principal Assistant Librarian of the Librarian of the Library, 1876-1912. Dr. Robert Fletcher joined the Library of the Surgeon General's office in 1876 where he assisted Dr. John Shaw Billings in compiling the Library's Index-Catalogue, the first volume of which appeared in 1880. From 1879-1899 he served as co-editor and later (1903-1911) as editor-in-chief of the Index Medicus.
