James T. Farrell (1904-1979) was an Irish-American novelist, short story writer, journalist, travel writer, poet, and literary critic. Bernstein met Thomas Wolfe in 1925 on a voyage between Europe and New York. Wolfe and Bernstein, the wife of a prominent New York stock broker and 18 years older than Wolfe, became lovers in Oct. 1925 and remained so for the next five years.
