Washington sends word of a fleet with 32 ships sailing from New York and another corps "under the command of Arnold, and still conjectured to be destined to the Southward." Arnold and Simcoe occupied Richmond January 5-7 as Jefferson had been able to turn out only 200 men to defend the town.
