The J. Marion Sims Medical Society was established in February 1923 by a group of students from the Medical College of the State of South Carolina. For the first few months, the Society was called the William Osler Medical Society, until Dr. W. Phillips, professor of anatomy at the College, suggested that, "as a body of South Carolinians, we should adopt the name of a Carolina man for the society."
