Collection comprises diaries, correspondence, and literary manuscripts by Herbert C. Thompson, an American journalist and historian who wrote about the Spanish-American War, the San Francisco earthquake of 1906, the Mexican Revolution, and World War I. Diaries include 58 volumes of detailed descriptions of places and events, much of which served as source material for newspaper accounts and magazine articles. Correspondence includes personal correspondence with family and professional correspondence with journalists and others. Collection also includes correspondence, notes and speeches of Thompson's father, John M. Thompson, who promoted Eugene as the site of Oregon's state university in the 1860s.

Herbert Cooper Thompson (1875-1960), an American journalist and writer, was Born in Eugene, Or. and began his journalistic career as a newspaper reporter in San Francisco, 1900 to 1910. He served as an Associated Press reporter from 1912 to 1920, assigned to England and France during World War I and to the Mexican Revolution, 1916 to 1918.
