Richard Hawes came to Kentucky from Virginia in 1810. He lived first in Lexington, then in Louisville, and finally settled in Daviess County. He donated the land for building the town of Hawesville. His son, Richard, was an attorney who practiced in central Kentucky. He served as the Provisional Governor of Kentucky for the Confederacy during the Civil War.
