Wilfred Jeanerette Rivers papers, 1894-1900.

Consisting of 169 manuscripts, 1885-1947 and undated, and 31 pocket volumes including travel letters and postcards from Europe, Cuba, Egypt, India, Japan, the Far East, Australia, and New Zealand from his older brother, Arthur David Rivers, a long-time resident of Baltimore, Maryland, and younger sister, Lily Lucas Rivers. Physician's visitation lists, 1890, 1893-1899, 1901-1920, with records of visits to patients, treatments, and fees; these lists also record births and deaths of Rivers' clients. Letter, 29 May 1894, E.R. Joyner to Dr. W. J. Rivers (Eastover, S.C.), re medicine for Joyner's mother, who "was taken with a... chill... (and) with a high fever." Receipt, 23 June 1900, W.H. Gibbes & Co. (Columbia, S.C.) to Dr. W.J. Rivers (Eastover, S.C.), for $3.32 in payment for labor of "1 Machinist 5 Hrs (and) Expenses"; written on letterhead of W.H. Gibbes & Co., "Dealers in Machinery and Mill Supplies," a company that communicated its business transactions via "long distance telephone" and used "Western Union Code," and offered "complete ginning outfits equipped with the improved Murray cleaning and distributing system"; receipt illustrated with two models of heavy equipment. Also present are letters of application from persons seeking teaching positions at Eastover School and various segregated schools for education of white and African American students in lower Richland County, S.C., as well as a souvenir of Eastover Public School District No. 4, printed for the 1902-1903 school year (folder 4), complete with a list of students and a small photograph of the school. Also includes post cards addressed to Mrs. W.J. Rivers from Richard Singleton, trustee of Zion [Episcopal] Church, acknowledge the receipt of money raised by women of the church and deposited to the Zion Church Building Society, 1902-1907.
