George Coffin papers, 1858-1898.

The largest part of the collection is composed of 352 original pen and ink political cartoons, 193 of which were published in the Washington Post, 1891-1896, on various topics, arranged chronologically. Other categories are: lithographic reproductions of political cartoons; original pen and ink illustrations for Civil War stories; 6 scrapbooks containing original sketches (1858-1869), clippings, and obituaries of Coffin; loose sketches and photographs of Coffin; 4 volumes of a diary (1859-1868), centering on his years as a student at Columbian College (now George Washington University) in the 1860's. Diaries mention student life, including reading lists, Civil war news, the city of Washington, family news, and church services attended.
