Collection of legal and financial papers, 1563-1901.

A collection assembled by a Boston attorney with an interest in the preservation of autographs and rare documents. A large portion of Greenough's collection, consisting of American manuscripts, is owned by the Mass. Historical Society; the portion in the possession of the Athenaeum consists of French, English and German manuscripts from the 16th through 19th centuries, mostly of a legal or financial nature (letters, receipts, accounts, contracts, deeds, writs, etc.). A few American documents are included. The collection has been inventories and portions catalogued, and a finding aid is available for researchers; items are arranged chronologically by country. Record groups include official documents from Caen (ca. 1675-1767) and Saint-Malo (ca. 1794-1804) France and New York State (1755-1812), and a group of acknowledgements of the U.S. declaration of War (1812) from Paris legations to the U.S. minister. The collection is particularly strong in 17th and 18th century documents from France and England, many minor pieces which together give a broad view of legal and financial arrangements which existed at that period in Europe.
