Foreign Mission school members lists and student's letters, 1819-1824.

Two lists, 1819, 1820, of members of the Mission School, giving the names of students and professors, their native names, and their country of origin. Possibly done as a penmanship exercise. Also three letters from William Botelho, a Chinese student, to Reverend William Jenks of Boston, bearing witness to his newly-acquired Christianity and expressing hopes of enlightening his countrymen. In Chinese, William's name as Lieaou A'-See.

William Jenks was born in Newton, Massachusetts on November 25, 1778. He received an A.B. from Harvard College in 1797, an A.M. in 1800 and an S.T.D. in 1842. He also received two degrees from Bowdoin College: an S.T.D. in 1825 and an L.L.D. in 1862. Jenks served as pastor of churches in Cambridge, Massachusetts and Bath, Maine before joining the faculty of Bowdoin College as professor of Oriental and English literature.
